1990-91: PP Gaston Chan

Message from Gaston Chan

In 1990-91,  Paulo Costa was R.I. President, Arthur Au was District Governor, and the R.I. theme was Honor Rotary with Faith and Enthusiasm.

Our Rotary Club had 68 members.  P.E. Jacques Tschudin, ran Club Service; V.P. Ronald Lu: Community;  George Li: Vocational and Anton Jeker: International.  Cecilia Ng was Hon. Sec. and Graeme Hopgood, Hon. Treasurer.  Rtn. Peter Knight was Program Chairman.

Club 388 sold out and provided support for many needy projects in Hong Kong and Overseas.

V.P. Ronald Lu raised a record amount at our stall at the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital Fair, and chaired the committee that hosted the District Sports Day.

Rtn. Albert Cheung and Rtn. Niels Kraunsoe won the District Tennis Tournament.  Rtn. Tim Lam and I were second runners-up.

P.P. Paul Young unveiled the Stanley Clock.

P.E. Jacques lugged his state-of-the-art portable computer to Macau, for registration at the District Conference.

Our club won a District Prize for Best Club Bulletin, distributed by computer via cutting edge high technology: facsimile transmission.

We visited the Mai Po Bird Sanctuary, and paid a Vocational visit north of the border to C.P. Dennis’ factory and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

Our fellowship events included a Poolside Party at the Country Club; the Spring Dinner; a Joint Meeting with the Rotary Clubs of Hong Kong, HKIE and HKNE; and a Ball at the American Club in Tai Tam.

With a dream team running the club,  I liaised with our District by attending the Joint Presidents’ Meetings.  The JPM’s were always followed by a superb dinner, organized by Patrick Herbert, French restaurateur and Charter President of RC Wanchai.  The Presidents of 1990-91, three of whom (Moses Cheng, Y.K.Cheng and Dipo Sani) became District Governor, developed a wonderful fellowship and lasting friendships.

Towards the end of the year I’ve attended so many balls, dinners, and lunches that I could hardly button up my tuxedo….
